GM Free Europe

European Social Forum 2004

The first seminar outlined the current state of play regarding GM crops and foods around Europe and the world.

Within the UK and certainly in countries such as Greece and Austria, France and Germany, where there is a national ban on GM food cultivation, public opposition remains strong.

However the US is currently challenging the EU's de facto moratorium on GM foods and crops. Under this pressure the EU Commission has started to override the Council of Ministers by authorising new GM varieties.

It seems that the EU is using debt to control countries such as Argentina and Brazil. Deforestation is occuring on a mass scale and biodiversity is being destroyed.

Further workshops to follow on GM WTO challenge and GM Free Zones.
